Salaries in Peru: Among the Lowest in the Region

In the current context of Latin America, Peru stands out for having one of the lowest wage levels in the region. According to a report from Caretas magazine, this is due to a combination of economic, social, and labor factors that affect the Peruvian job market.

Among the most relevant reasons is labor informality, which impacts over 70% of the working population. This phenomenon has led many workers to lack access to basic labor benefits, perpetuating poverty and limiting opportunities for wage improvement.

Additionally, the lack of investment in education and training has contributed to a mismatch between the skills workers possess and the demands of the labor market. This results in a shortage of skilled workers that could have driven higher wages in specific sectors.

Another factor to consider is the high concentration of the labor market in low-wage sectors, such as agriculture and informal trade, to the detriment of more productive and better-paying sectors. In recent years, despite economic growth, wage increases have been minimal, leading to discontent among workers.

Experts suggest that to improve the wage situation, it is essential to implement policies that promote employment formalization, education and training, as well as encourage investment in productive sectors. Without a comprehensive strategy, salaries in Peru will remain stagnant, leaving the population without the necessary tools to improve their quality of life.
